Leyshon Steam Carriage

Concept work from Much Haste to Igford!, my Steampunk-themed final year Uni game project.

An early vehicle proposal for the game - steam powered cars are going to feature heavily and this was the second developed design - the Leyshon Horseless Road Carriage.

Leyshon have an established background in the manufacturing of Traction Engines, and were approached by Dr. Langthorne to produce a roadworthy and managable steam-operated vehicle built for the purpose of racing.

The Leyshon is a robust vehicle, far more so than it's rivals such as the Applebeg-Perriam, but it is also a heavy machine and requires a significant amount of strength to control. The pistons that drive the wheels operate in a similar fashion to Richard Trevithick's early engine designs, though had to be modified because the force required to move the vehicle at high speeds often bent them, rendering the steam carriage inoperable.

This is a picture of the vehicle before modification - with a rather flimsy piece of iron attached to the rear wheel that nearly skewered the engine driver during initial testing when it broke free.
