Rapidisc Tournament Poster

Finished, at long last. This has been waiting to be done since May.

This is a montage picture based on my final year project for my Animation HND in University - a mock-up/parody of the current wave of mainstream anime that has made it's way to western cultures. I decided to do something colourful and fun because everyone else at the time was doing depressing or adult themed animation and me being me had to break from the norm This whole project was kinda upbeat, I had some jungle drum 'n bass and happy J-pop style techno dance as a soundtrack to keep things bouncing along. Doing cheerfully 'what you see is what you get' work like this made working on the project FUN, which is what I think animation is all about

This is "Rapidisc Galactic Tournament", a sport played with large hoverboard-riding mechs. The story follows a small-time team, the Lunar Rovers (with the blue and yellow mechs) as they attempt to win the tournament against all odds.

The idea of the game is to score (and stop the opposition from scoring) with a single red disc by throwing it through hoops placed above skate-park style ramps at either end of the arena, the amount of points obtained determined by the 'style' in which the player's mech executes the 'score'. Think freestyle skateboarding crossed with a regular sport like basketball or soccer and you're getting there

The characters on this piece, clockwise starting from the top left, are: Meera Maxx, Mexcelle 2.0, Rou (All Lunar Rovers players), SeeDOS, Zee Fawkes (the commentators of the tournament), a Lunar Rovers DiscBot and in the background a rival DiscBot from a team called Savage Diesel.

The original piece lasted 5 minutes and was quite rough, but it seemed to go down well with the tutors. It was also quite good fun to make, especially the sound recording This pic was drawn mainly as a thank you for the people who helped me with the voice acting:
